Quick Question: What Do You Expect?
Overzealous expectations can cause unwarranted anxiety
and disappointment. You need to set your expectations based on your current and
desired lifestyle, and the resources you can and are willing to access. Most
importantly, there is not an exact formula for arranging expectations. You are
unique, and your action rhythms cannot be determined by anyone other than
yourself.
Determine if
your expectations are right for you.
Thinking Point #1:
What are your
strengths & weaknesses?
Create a T-
chart that lists your strengths on one side and your weaknesses on the other
side. Your strengths will drive your expectations. Stick to what you are good
at, and your expectations will be fulfilled.
On the
other hand, you can also use your weaknesses to drive your expectations. So,
you are wondering how can weaknesses be good. Well, here’s how! First, your
weaknesses can direct your focus on areas to improve which means you expect to
be a better you. Secondly, weaknesses can be overcome by your strengths and in
turn signifies you can expect no less than the best outcome.
Thinking Point #2:
What are your values
and beliefs?
Belief
systems are instrumental to determining your expectations. For example, if you
believe that only men can perform certain duties, you will believe you can or
cannot do those same tasks depending on if you are male or female. Have an all-
inclusive, unbiased belief system so that you can strive to achieve whatever
you desire.
Place high value
on rules, cultures, attitudes, etc. to determine the type of lifestyle you
expect to lead. Be open, fair and respectful to all aspects of how a lifestyle of
value should be lived. The higher your values are towards understanding,
empathy and quality; the closer your expectations will be to success.
Thinking Point #3:
What does the world
need from you?
If you want
bigger expectations, expand your reach. Most people only focus on including close
family and friends when setting expectations. Family and friends cover only a
small perimeter of the universe that you can make a difference in. In order for
your high expectations to be fulfilled, you must have a greater mission of
reaching a larger mass of the population. Successful expectations are connected
to the purpose you have in life, and those you serve with your purpose.
