Mental health is a topical subject. Even though many people are ignorant about it, conversations about it are coming up both online and offline. One question that keeps coming is;

“Can bullying affect mental health?” Of course, it can!

Imagine being a victim every day. Whether it is for seven months or seven years or anything in between, frequent abuse is not something anyone can forget or get over quickly.

For most people, it stays with them for a long time, causing a ripple effect of low self-esteem, anxiety, depression, and lack of self-confidence.

You cannot underestimate the effects of bullying on emotional and mental well-being. These effects stay for a very long time. If you are being bullied, please speak out. If you are bullying someone, you need to stop now.

Proactive Actions Against Bullying

Take note of the following tips. They’ll help you against bullying:

#1 Phrases like ‘toughen up’ does not work anymore. It is insensitive.

#2 Honest and open conversations about bullying should be routine.

#3 Write powerful affirmations and quotes for yourself and put them in conspicuous places and use them to encourage yourself every day.

#4 Establish a strong support system with your loved ones.

#5 Bullying is not okay! It is not a normal thing.

#6 Always know you are not alone.

#7 Don’t be a bystander if you see someone being bullied, step in, and speak up assertively so you can overcome bullying.

#8 Seek help.

If you are still suffering from the effects of bullying, please slow down. Don’t allow others to hurry your healing. It is a process. It may take years, occasionally even a lifetime and that’s okay.

Treating Co-Occurring Disorder

Treating Co-Occurring Disorder

When individuals suffer from drug or alcohol addictions and mental health disorders, we call the condition co-occurring disorder. This disorder is common in those receiving treatments against substance abuse. There are many things that impact one recovering from substance abuse which can trigger the use of these drugs, the intake of alcohol again, or result in co-occurring disorder. Some of such are:

#1 Guilt

#2 Grief

#3 Depression

#4 Low Self Esteem

#5 Anger Management Issues

That said, these things are considered more as symptoms rather than disorders. But their impact on the patient can not be overemphasized.

Three Common Co-Occurring Disorders

Eating Disorder

Eating disorders like anorexia or excessive eating are quite common in people dealing with substance addiction. They tend to rely on drugs or alcohol to build their self-confidence and suppress hunger, resulting in co-occurring disorders with time.

Anxiety Disorder

People with many episodes of anxiety and panic attacks tend to result in substance use. Some overdose on their doctor’s prescription, while others rely on alcohol and illicit drugs as a coping mechanism.

PTSD

Post-traumatic stress disorder leads some to substance misuse. After going through stressful, scary, or life-threatening situations, some people relieve the symptoms that accompany PTSD by taking alcohol and drugs.

Co-Occurring Disorder Treatment Techniques

When suffering from a dual disorder, also known as co-occurring disorder, you need to get help. Seek professional help and support from close friends and family. This would help you maintain a healthy and balanced life.

Treatment techniques that would be of great help include:

#1 Peer support groups

#2 Individualized counseling

#3 Cognitive behavioral therapy

#4 Medication-assisted treatment

#5 Aftercare group or individualized therapy

It is important to get treated, but it is much more important to get treated by the appropriate quarters. Seek professional help, and you will receive the correct guidance on which treatment would suit you because every situation has its peculiarities. It would also keep you accountable, especially if you experience a relapse.

“We honor ourselves when we speak out for recovery. We show the world that recovery matters because it brings hope and peace into the lives of individuals and their loved ones.”

Good Stress vs. Bad Stress: How to Tell the Difference

Good Stress vs. Bad Stress: How to Tell the Difference

Stress is our body’s response to fear and anxiety. It is a survival instinct. While we are rushing to meet project deadlines, sitting in traffic or juggling family life it is easy to get overwhelmed.

However, some kinds of stress can be a motivating force in your life—like worrying about a project, presentation, competing for promotion or even going on a first date. Good stress is the type of stress you feel when excited. Your pulse accelerates and you feel the surging of your hormones. It keeps you feeling great and excited about life. However, bad stress occurs when you repeatedly face stressors that take a heavy toll on your mood.

It could be a stressful job, an unhappy lifestyle or something that constantly puts you in a bad mood and makes you lose interest in family and hobbies.

So how do you deal with good stress vs. bad stress?

#1 Dedicate time to Yoga and meditation

#2 Take walks frequently

#3 Maintain social connections

#4 Exercise regularly

#5 Always remind yourself of your strengths

#6 Have a positive mindset

#7 Try to see the potential benefits of every situation

#8 Create your method of self-care

#9 Try journaling whenever you feel overwhelmed

#10 Plan ahead

#11 Reach out for help
