Contributory Factors to Malnutrition

Contributory Factors to Malnutrition

One has malnutrition when the nutrients needed by the body is not enough. When you do not take in enough nutrients via eating well-nourished meals, the result is malnutrition. Also, when the body system has a problem absorbing nutrients, it would lead to malnutrition.

It is important to note that malnutrition is not only caused by an intentional decision to starve oneself in the bid to lose weight in the case of anorexia. There are many other factors that contribute to and lead to malnutrition.

Factors and Conditions That Lead to Malnutrition

#1 Poverty

#2 Drug and substance abuse.

#3 Drugs with side effects like loss of appetite.

#4 Mental health challenges such as schizophrenia and depression.

#5 Health problems such as cancer, liver disease, lungs conditions, diarrhea, vomiting.

#6 Health issues that can lead to inability to digest food and absorb nutrients like ulcerative colitis

Aside from all these, having a busy schedule, which makes you forget to eat, also leads to malnutrition. It is important to not just eat anything or eat in large quantity for a short period of time like one suffering from bulimia. You need to pay attention to your health. Remember that health is wealth.

How to Prevent Malnutrition

Skipping or missing a meal is not the best. You should eat healthy, so you do not become malnourished. Ensure you eat a healthy, balanced diet, and if you have a poor appetite, you should consider eating thrice daily. Also, water is vital; drink water after your meal. Do not drink too much water before your meal, so you do not get filled up from too much water intake before you are done eating.

To eat healthy, introduce these into your daily diet:

#1 Fruits

#2 Vegetable

#3 Diary products

#4 Food rich in carbohydrates

#5 Proteins like meat, fish, egg

Remember that to stay healthy, you have to eat healthy. An Ayurvedic proverb that buttresses on this says: “When diet is wrong, medicine is of no use. When diet is correct, medicine is of no need.”
