Common Sleep Disorders and Their Symptoms



Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder in which breathing stops repeatedly and starts again. This prevents those suffering from it from enjoying a good night’s rest.

 

Symptoms

1. Heavy and loud snoring

2. Tiredness after a night’s sleep

3. Inability to asleep

4. Breathing stops during sleep

5. Hypersomnia (excessive daytime sleepiness)

6. Low attention span while awake

7. Dry mouth after a night’s sleep

8. Drowsiness and Irritability

 

Insomnia

Insomnia makes it difficult for you to fall to sleep, to stay asleep, or cause you to wake up early and not be able to go back to sleep. This sleep disorder affects work productivity and quality of life because it saps one’s energy and affects one’s mood.

 

Symptoms

1. Finding it hard to fall asleep at nighttime

2. Waking up too early

3. Fatigue after a night’s sleep

4. Mood swing, depression, or sleepiness

5. Lack of focus during the day

6. Easily prone to accidents and errors

7. Constant worry about sleep

 

Narcolepsy

Narcolepsy is a condition that causes overwhelming daytime drowsiness and sudden attacks of sleep. It is a chronic sleep disorder, and those who suffer from it find it hard to stay awake for a long time.

 

Symptoms

1. Sudden loss of muscle tone

2. Sleep paralysis

3. Uncontrollable excessive daytime sleepiness

4. Hallucinations and REM sleep

5. Automatic behavior during short episodes of narcolepsy

 

Restless Legs Syndrome

RLS is an uncontrollable irresistible urge to move your legs, which can also cause a crawling sensation in your thighs, calves, feet, and in your arm at times.

 

Symptoms

1. Sensations in legs and limbs as a result of lying or sitting down for a long period of time.

2. Relief in legs and limbs as a result of moving around.

3. Leg twitching during sleep.

4. Legs and limb movements worsen in the evening.

 

Getting enough good night’s sleep is important.
