Finding Daily Joy and Fun With Dementi

Finding Daily Joy and Fun With Dementia

Alzheimer’s is the most common form of dementia. It causes a continuous decline in the thinking, behavioral, and social skills that allow a person to function independently. No treatment cures Alzheimer’s disease. However, laughter may still be the best medicine.

The truth is we all feel a bit calmer, happier, and healthier after a good laugh. Laughter lifts our spirits and reduces anxiety, which is often the cause of wandering and emotional outbursts in patients.

It isn’t easy to accept that your loved one might not remember you all the time, but as a caregiver, you can improve their quality of life. Add fun-filled and creative activities to their daily routine. Help them remember pleasant memories from the past and encourage them to engage in activities they enjoy. This can lead to productive and satisfying lives because they are less likely to get stressed or show worrying behaviors.

Here are few ways to spice up their day…

#1 Create a daily routine

Routine is a great source of comfort. Help them create a predictable daily routine. This will help to minimize distractions.

#2 Meaningful activities

Allow them to engage in activities that make them feel useful and good about themselves. It has to be something they enjoy doing. Select these activities based on their abilities

#3 Music

Music is food for the soul. It has a great influence on our emotions. Play the music they prefer and encourage some movement. If they want to dance, dance with them!

Nothing prepares you for this illness. However, don’t dwell on it. Value the moment shared together, the pearls of wisdom, their smile, and their humor.

Alzheimer’s: Communication Tips for Caregiver

Alzheimer’s: Communication Tips for Caregivers

Have you ever felt this frustration when your loved one forgets meeting a person or even knowing them at all? How often have you said, “You know him, Dad, you met him last week at dinner”, or “you remember, we went there yesterday?”

These phrases have no relevance to those with Alzheimer’s. These people have issues with thinking and remembering how to manage their life. Their symptoms range from short-term memory loss to personality changes like depression and mood swings.

These effects can be overwhelming—your world has been turned upside down, and you find it difficult to communicate with them.

Keep calm and follow these tips:

#1 Clear All Distractions

Whenever you want to talk to them, noisy interruptions can distract both of you. Always chose a quiet and peaceful environment for your conversations.

#2 Listen

This is needed for individuals with memory impairment. Learn to listen to them. Resist the temptation to butt in with a comment. Give them the time and space to express themselves.

#3 Use Memory Cues

Photos and letters can help you jog memories. How about sitting together while checking out old pictures? This is soothing and therapeutic.

#4 Don’t Correct or Contradict

Refrain from quizzing them, even when you don’t agree with what they are saying. Try to stop yourself from correcting them.

#5 Respond With Affection

People with dementia often feel anxious, confused, and unsure of themselves. Sometimes holding hands and responding with expressions of support and reassurance will put them at ease.

Through all these difficult moments, always remember that:

Those with dementia are still people, they still have stories, they still have character, and they are all unique, and they need to be treated as humans.

You! Yes, You! You Deserve All the Love

You! Yes, You! You Deserve All the Love

Why are you so uncomfortable about what makes you so powerful? For many people, the concept of self-love might bring up images of cheesy self-care books, or binge-watching your favorite series on Netflix. But as many psychologists attest, self-love and compassion are the keys to good health and mental well-being.
Most of the time when you are too hard on yourself, you need to know this; the persecutory inner voice that prevents you from celebrating your little wins and showing yourself a daily dose of self-love is the hallmark of perfectionism.

Use these four keys to improve on self-love:
#1 Self-Care
You deserve all the love and attention. It produces positive feelings and boosts your self-esteem. Taking care of yourself is also an important reminder to yourself and others that you and your needs are important.
#2 Self-Confidence
Embracing your self-confidence radiates a natural beauty that cannot be diluted or ignored. You need to love and celebrate yourself no matter what because even if you don’t fit into society’s standard, you are still awesome regardless. This is what makes you powerful, absolutely fearless, and comfortable in your skin.
#3 Self-Worth
Accepting the uniqueness of your self-worth is magical, and it starts with you. Whenever you have negative thoughts, turn them into positive affirmations. Say them with full conviction, and you will see changes in how you feel and act.
#4 Self-Control
Being in control is vital to achieving the goals you have set for yourself. It gives you inner strength and the ability to stick to your decisions.

Self-love is not being selfish. It is simply learning how to prioritize your happiness.

Do You Suffer From Mother’s Day Blues?

Do You Suffer From Mother’s Day Blues?

Love. Support. Nurture. Warmth. Heartfelt. Compassionate. Kind. Patient. Selfless.

In a perfect world you would expect and even wish your Mother to be perfect all the time. The reality is…. Mothers are human too. Sometimes, under certain circumstances, a mother can be superwoman BUT she is not super human.

What causes the Mother’s Day Blues? Holding onto expired and undue grudges can turn a joyful Mother’s Day into a hopeless and lonely experience.

#1 Death

Grief over the loss of a mother can cause you to isolate yourself on the second Sunday of May. In order to enjoy the day, start filling your thoughts and feelings with all of the good memories you have about your special and precious motherly moments.

#2 Neglect

Let go of the woulda, coulda and shoulda that wasn’t present in the relationship. Not to excuse abusive and dangerous supervision that some mothers have and do provide, but you have the opportunity to live a better life. Seek the help that you need to process the neglect so that your life and joy can push forward.

#3 Disconnects

In some situations, the Mother was around but there was no bond. Lack of communication and quality time can ruin anticipations to spend time with Mothers. A more positive approach is to surround yourself with people who offer the type of motherly affection you desire. The most important thing is to connect with positivity and support.

Addiction is Seductive

Addiction is Seductive

Addiction is a battle that many lose to over and over again. The good news is….even though you may lose the battles, you can win the war.
One big challenge with addictive behaviors is that people mainly recognize only drugs and alcohol as the culprits. Today sex addiction is becoming more of an issue in relationships.

An article published on foxnews.com highlights the sex addiction of a former NFL football player Mike Caussin. His sex addiction has caused marital issues between him and wife Jana Kramer. Within the article the couple mention a few pointers to shed light about how to overcome sex addiction within a marriage.

This is what happens when you don’t face your addiction.

#1 Shame On You!
Most people don’t seek help for addictions because it will cause shame and embarrassment. The true shame of addiction occurs when you don’t admit you have an issue and when you don’t seek the treatment you need.

#2 A Rocky Family.
Active and continuous addictive behaviors when left untreated will cause family instability. Addiction doesn’t just affect the prime participant, it has adverse emotional and physical effects on all family members.

#3 You lose.
Addictive behaviors cause you to become ineffective in significant areas of your life. When you fail to properly address the issues of addiction your lifestyle goes down. You lose financial, material, relationships, careers, family and most importantly you lose YOURSELF.

Everybody knows somebody. Battles with addiction should not be faced alone.

Sizzling Tips to Let Your Freedom Shine Through

Sizzling Tips to Let Your Freedom Shine Through

On October 14, 2017, I was emancipated. That was the day myself and 7 other courageously beautiful women got the chance to breath without restraints. We gained our freedom to live again. Each of us shared inspirational stories of how a traumatic event from the past transformed us into stronger human beings today.
Past traumatic events can hold you hostage for a long time. Don’t let your past hinder your future. There are realistic ways to overcome the fear of moving forward and live with freedom forever.

Actionable Ways to Rock Your Freedom:

Tip #1: Set Emotional Boundaries

To be happy means being comfortable with expressing how you feel about past situations whether good or bad. Don’t try to understand your feelings at first. Be patient. Allow it to flow through your body unrestrained. Then be kind enough to yourself to release it by setting healthy outlets.

Tip #2: Love Thy “Self”

The best way to break free from a traumatic setback is to take care of YOU! The battle is real so you need to be strong emotionally, mentally and physically. How do you do that?  Recognize and develop ALL of your “self”. Implement a plan to increase your self- love, self- respect, self- discipline, self- care, and the list goes on & on.

Tip #3: Use Your Heart

It’s obvious that the person who is inflicting the trauma does not have a heart. Use your heart as a symbol of motivation and strength. Build up your super power to be a long- standing survivor. Reach deep into your heart and focus on what or who is dear to your heart. Use that object of affection as a visual image to overcome any actions, feelings or thoughts resulting from the trauma.

During my years of trauma, I never forgot that something better was coming real soon. That was how I survived, and that’s how I grew strong enough to break free. If you are a victim of physical, emotional, financial, sexual abuse or maltreatment, don’t sit back and keep the pain inside…… Set it FREE!

Virginia Manning’s Project We Are Free 2017 Ode

BEAT UP

There is just one thing I want to know! Why are you always beating on me?
The sun rose. You woke up. You still have “Life” in your body. So why are you putting me down?
You can speak words out of your mouth. You are still in “your’ right mind. You can look in the mirror and “frown”! Why are you keeping me down?
But one day I looked in the mirror. I looked at my kids and cried no more!
The sun rose again. I woke up. Life took over my body. You will not always beat on me.
I started singing sweet psalms. My mind wasn’t right. I was down but with some fight.
I smiled. I panicked. I danced. I was frantic.
The sun rose yet again. And you were gone. My “self” appeared. My strength was strong. “It’s me”, she said. I’m free!
Free at last! Free at last! Thank God Almighty! I’m Free at Last!
But that wasn’t the freedom that I needed at last. I needed to love all of me. My goods, my bads, my miracles and my faults…
And then…
My phone rang, and it was sad. the sorrow echoed and it said…
There is just one thing I want to know! Why are you always beating on me?
FREE AT LAST!
