Your Attention is the Lifeline of Suicide Prevention

Your Attention is the Lifeline of Suicide Prevention

If you never had to experience the harsh reality of someone taking their own life, this week is the perfect opportunity to educate yourself. Even if you have not had a suicide experience, knowledge is essential. Suicide is very prominent in today’s society. Know the signs and some tips to get assistance is KEY to fighting such a tragic loss of life.

Since the tragic suicide of my own mother in 1994, I have come to the realization that knowing the warning sign is not enough. You have to know how to actively and successfully rescue a person who is so depressed and feeling hopeless that death is the only possible answer.

In observance of suicide prevention week, here are some simple tips to help you or anyone you may suspect as suicidal get the guidance and strength to overcome the thoughts and temptations of suicide.

#1 Talk is NOT cheap when it comes to talking about wanting to die or to kill oneself. When this experience happens, cling to the person to make them feel loved and important to you, family and life. If it’s said don’t ignore, thinking it will go away. It is REAL THOUGHTS AND FEELINGS!

Call the suicide lifeline at 1 800 273 TALK (8255)

#2 There is no predictable pattern when someone wants to end their life. Warning signs are clues to act, but no warning signs is the same for everyone or on certain days. Suicidal actions can be quick or progressive over time. You never know. Action is KEY.

#3 Don’t panic and make the person feel awkward or strange for having feelings about death. The person probably already feels hopeless and worthless for wanting death. REMAIN CALM AND SEEK PROFESSIONAL ASSISTANCE.

Don’t ignore the need for therapy or counseling to work through whatever issue you may think is bigger than you. Your life is more important than any issue.

Family Vacation is Stressful… Time For Your Momcation

Family Vacation is Stressful… Time For Your Momcation

Now that school has started again… it’s time to enjoy a little more down time. Summer equals fun time for children but more stress for the mom.
Summer vacation means buying more food, cleaning up more messes, driving to more activities, finding babysitters while you work AND family vacation. But let’s face the facts… family vacation can sometimes be anything but more relaxing.
Since all of that summer stress is in the rearview mirror while you drop kids off to school…. It’s time for a momcation! (or dadcation- can’t forget about the daddy duties).

Why is a momcation so important?

#1 Stress Relief
An excess amount of stress causes other ailments such as heart disease, strokes and high blood pressure. Moms- if you do not take care of you, you cannot care for your family and career effectively. It’s okay to set yourself up for regular stress relief vacations.

#2 Refocus
Less stress makes you more productive. A momcation decreases your need to take time off from work and other mommy duties. Refocusing allows you to realistically balance your life and reduce overwhelm.

#3 Love & Happiness
Strengthen your intimate relationship. Regular time to regain yourself allows less tension when satisfying your significant other. Everyone desires more love and more happiness. Stress can stop the connection in relationships.

(Guest Blogger- Erica Fulton) Power of a Voice

Power of a Voice
The power of a voice is a common theme that we as counselors run across in our field. I recall my own inner revelation of a stifled voice during my chaplaincy residency at Memorial Hermann. Some people fall on the other side of the spectrum due to their family of origin. Our family of origin often becomes our first teacher and influences how we use our voice. Our voice is either empowered or dismissed. With this being said, cultural values can also play a major role in how we use our voice. Furthermore, we are uniquely designed human beings who are in part a product of our environment. Nonetheless, we must realize the impact of an empowered or stifled voice. A stifled voice will leave a generation with no power or purpose, but an empowered voice will raise up a nation. An empowered voice also will birth a nation who speaks. I encourage you to journal some times throughout the week and write down opportunities where you failed to speak or you did. Journal the results!
So I leave you with this question: Will you build a legacy or continue a pathology?

To Grieve or Not to Grieve What is the Problem

To Grieve or Not to Grieve
What is the Problem

If you need to grieve the lose of a loved one, pet, job or any other element that left your life abruptly, by all means, do what’s best for you. Often times, you feel like you are supposed to hold in your feelings of anger, sadness, happiness or acceptance. The stages of grief are unpredictable and individualized. Step #1 is to be familiar with the different ways grief can and will affect you, your life and others who support you.

Here are some normal but unusual reactions to grief:

#1 You are supposed to cry
Express your grief over a precious person, pet, item or event in the way that you need to. The objective is to get any feelings and emotions out that will hold you back from moving forward in life.

#2 You are supposed to be happy
Once again if you want to celebrate the transition of what you lost, GO AHEAD! Everyone grieves differently. Being happy doesn’t mean you loved any less than you do.

#3 You are supposed to move forward with ease
Being stuck is another symptom that grief can cause. Whatever and however long you need to process your life and what you need is your choice. Don’t be forced to move through your grief without setting realistic expectations for your next phase of life.

Find a grief support group near you!

The stages of grief and how you should be reacting can be tricky.
